My current daily driver is a 2016 Volkswagen Mk7 TDI, while it is a powerful little diesel packed neatly into a little 1.6L engine it absolutely benefitted from a bulkier cold air intake system from Ramair, while this install was not sponsored I do feel these guys need to mentioned. Ramair are industry leaders when it comes to induction kits for not just standard road cars but in the racing industry too!
On to the installation itself, I purchased this kit from the hero’s over at MCG Autos based in Navan Co. Meath, It arrived nearly overnight and the guys checked before hand if it was in stock. Prices for these kits vary from car to car so it pays to have a look around for what would suit your car best. This kit was designed to replace the factory air intake from Volkswagen. It comes with a very clear pictured installation manual.
As you can see the heat shield helps to contain the hot air coming from the engine itself, it creates a pocket of isolated cold air aiming it directly into the intake filter cone. The install calls to connect the MAF sensor straight into the rubber hose for the intake so it maintains all the factory connections and hoses, basically plug and play and doesn’t show up any dash lights or anything! I’ve noticed a significant top end power increase, accelerating in 4th and 5th gear you can really notice the increase. It also looks very smart under the bonnet ideal for showing off at a car meet/show!!
Is it worth it? you might ask? I think it ultimately depends on personal preference, while these kits do sport a decent price tag they aren’t exactly cheap either but you are paying for quality parts so bear that in mind. Some cars you might notice a more significant return in performance compared to others, but hey, it sounds mean at the same time!
