It’s not a Golf, so why Polo?

Some things become household names, ask any young person looking for their first car you can almost be assured they’ve considered a Volkswagen Polo at some point. The older siblings of the VW polo almost wouldn’t recognise this 2021 model. Some might even say it’s an institution! But this does beg the question, why Polo? Is this city car worth the investment?

Boasting a comfy economic 1L Petrol engine putting out a pleasant 80hp this Polo I was given on loan from Wexford Volkswagen while my car was getting some much needed TLC was quite capable as a little run around commuter car. While there was noticeable drop in power in higher gears compared to my Golf, in low traffic heavy situations this little motor was perfect. Responsive, agile and light to drive. However at motorway speeds this little engine does rev quite high and would be a little more petrol hungry than other bigger engine cousins.

The interior is fresh, modern and features all the mod-cons you’d expect in a modern car, steering wheel controls, large easy to read and see dials and although a little firm, you felt well seated in the seats, while the older models of the Golf and Polo featured an obvious difference in interior size, this model would nearly rival a Golf for interior space. There is an option to have Apple Car Play on the Infotainment unit – but that’s spec dependent.

While I’m not sure if the fog lights are a standard feature on this model, they were a handy addition to have. Acting as daytime running lights they absolutely help with being visible on the roads especially as we crawl into darker evenings in winter. The headlights had a wide spread and while not LED, still lit up the roads well.

While the Polo wouldn’t be my own personal choice if I was looking for a car, I think it holds it’s own in the category for similar size cars. but, If you’re a young family looking for an affordable city run around, or maybe a grandparent looking to downsize but still need space for the grandkids or even a young driver looking to buy their first brand new car I think the VW polo shouldn’t be overlooked in the showroom. The yearly road tax is a reasonable €200 and general running costs (Fuel, tyres and services etc) shouldn’t break the bank but like anything if you look after it, it’ll look after you.

This is in no way a sponsored post and just my own feed back I’d like to highly recommend the folks in Wexford Volkswagen for all of your sales and service needs.
